Dior is one of the most French luxury brands in the world by identity — Avenue Montaigne, Christian Dior's 1947 New Look, the couture archives. Buyers assume that a Lady Dior or a Book Tote is stitched by an old Parisian artisan. It's not. Most Dior leather bags are cut, stitched and finished in Scandicci, the same Tuscan leather district that produces bags for Gucci, Fendi, Celine, Saint Laurent — and LIETA.

The fact most people don't know about Dior

Dior operates an Italian production complex called Manifatture Dior in Scandicci, on the western edge of Florence. About 100 artisans work there directly on Dior leather goods. The Lady Dior, the Book Tote, most Saddle bags, most Dior Toujours totes, and most of the Dior Group's leather-goods output for women passes through this facility.

A smaller share of production still happens in France — some pieces at LVMH-owned French ateliers, some final assembly in Paris for couture-line items. But if you own a modern Lady Dior, statistically it was born in Tuscany.

Scandicci: the Florence leather district Dior chose

Scandicci is a town of 50,000 on the western edge of Florence, twenty minutes by tram from the Duomo. It contains roughly 600 leather-goods workshops — the densest concentration of luxury-leather production in the world.

Gucci's main leather hub is here (in Casellina). Prada's Naska nylon facility is nearby. Celine, Saint Laurent and Loewe all have workshop activity in the district. Independent ateliers produce for houses that will never name them.

LIETA works with an atelier in Scandicci too — eleven artisans on one floor, sharing a building with a workshop that produces under NDA for two French houses we cannot name. The Dior Manifatture is a short drive away.

The 2024 Dior subcontractor scandal

In 2024, an Italian court fined a subcontractor supplying Dior with certain leather goods after an investigation revealed exploitative labour conditions — workers paid below minimum wage, long shifts, migrant labour housed on site. The case broke a specific illusion: even at the very top of LVMH luxury, the production cost of a bag can be shockingly low, and the difference between a €2,600 retail price and a €57 production cost had to come from somewhere.

Dior responded with tightened supplier audits and a public commitment to internal production. But the story confirmed what industry observers have long said: the price of a luxury bag is 80-90% brand and 10-20% craft.

What "Made in Italy" means for Dior

Dior labels its Italian-made bags "Made in Italy" — legitimately, because they are cut, stitched and assembled in Italy from mostly Italian leather. Some French-assembled Dior bags carry "Made in France." The label is usually inside the bag, near the interior pocket.

The important thing is that "Made in Italy" for Dior means the Scandicci Tuscan leather district. Not Milan, not Rome. Same district as our workshop, same tannery supply base, same tools.

What our connection looks like

Our hides come from Walpier, a Tuscan tannery in Castelfranco di Sotto — fifty kilometres from Scandicci. Walpier is one of the tanneries that supplies the high-end of the market. Dior's leather buyers walk through the same warehouses.

The stitching machines are the same Pfaff models. The waxed linen thread is the same supplier. The brass hardware is gold-plated in Arezzo, at platers who also serve French houses we're not permitted to name.

The difference is scale, brand equity and retail overhead — not craft.

Why Dior is €5,500 and ours is €255

Production cost. The 2024 investigation confirmed what the industry has long whispered: the actual materials + labour cost of a Dior leather bag lands in the €50-500 range depending on the model. A Book Tote is closer to €150-300 to produce. A Lady Dior is €250-500.

Real estate. Avenue Montaigne. Rue Saint-Honoré. Fifth Avenue. Ginza. Every Dior flagship is on the most expensive shopping street in its city. Every one has to pay for itself.

Marketing. Charlize Theron for J'adore. Cinema campaigns. Fashion week. Ambassadors on every continent. LVMH group overhead.

None of that is on our overhead. The bag costs us production plus a modest margin.

How to spot a Dior that's actually made well

Cannage pattern. The quilted "Cannage" motif on Lady Dior bags should be perfectly geometric, with even diamond spacing and clean thread tension. Uneven Cannage is a sign of a rushed batch or a fake.

Charm hardware. The D-I-O-R gold charms on a Lady Dior should be solid brass, gold-plated, with clean lettering and a heavy feel. Press a fingernail into the metal — no mark should remain.

Edge finishing. Dior uses several coats of edge paint, sanded smooth. Scratch gently with a fingernail — no flaking on the real thing.

Interior stamp. A genuine Dior interior has a leather patch stamped "Christian Dior · Made in Italy" (or France) with clean, embossed lettering. The stamp should be indented, not just printed on top.
