Where Saint Laurent bags are made (and why ours come from the same district)
Saint Laurent is one of the most-searched luxury bag brands on Google — and one of the most opaque about where its bags are actually made. The label says "Made in Italy". The atelier is in Paris. The supply chain is somewhere in between. Here's what's actually going on.
Saint Laurent's official answer
Saint Laurent leather goods carry the standard "Made in Italy" stamp. Under EU rules, that means the last substantial transformation happened in Italy — the final cutting, assembly and stitching. Design happens in Paris; production happens in Italy. (See our piece on what "Made in Italy" actually means for the legal definition.)
Where in Italy — the actual factories
Saint Laurent does not operate its own bag factories. Production is contracted to a small number of Italian leather ateliers, primarily in:
- Scandicci (the Florence leather district) — for many of the iconic bags including the Loulou, Niki and Manhattan.
- Veneto (around Vicenza) — for some classic Sac de Jour and structured pieces.
- Marche (around Pesaro) — for smaller leather goods.
This is the same district we work with — Scandicci is a 25-minute drive from central Florence and houses roughly 600 leather workshops that produce for the major luxury houses.
The leather itself
Saint Laurent's smooth calf comes mostly from Tuscan tanneries — typically Conceria Tempesti, Conceria Walpier (the same tannery that makes our Buttero leather) and Conceria 800. Hardware is plated in Arezzo (the brass-plating capital of Italy). Zip pulls are YKK Italy on most current pieces.
What this means for price
A Saint Laurent Loulou Medium retails at €2,450. The leather, hardware, lining and labour for that bag costs the factory roughly €280-€350. The remaining €2,100 is brand, marketing, real estate, retail margin and the price of carrying "Saint Laurent" on the inside label. (We break this down in detail in the real markup breakdown.)
The LIETA take
We're in the same Scandicci district, working with the same calibre of leather (Walpier Buttero, full-grain, vegetable-tanned). We don't have Saint Laurent's design archive or storefront on Avenue Montaigne — and you don't pay for those. The Lungo is €265. The bag itself is built the same way.
