Where Chanel bags are made — France AND Italy, explained
Chanel is one of the most-asked questions on Google when it comes to bag provenance: "Are Chanel bags made in France? Are they made in Italy?" The brand has, for decades, made this question harder than it needed to be. Here's the actual answer.
Both France and Italy — and that's official
Chanel produces leather goods in both France and Italy. The country-of-origin label on a specific Chanel bag depends on which atelier produced it. Both labels are official; both bags are equally "Chanel". This has been documented since the 1980s when Chanel acquired Italian production capacity to scale beyond their original French workshops.
Where in France
French Chanel bag production happens primarily in Verneuil-en-Halatte (Oise, north of Paris), where Chanel owns the Manufacture de Mode et Maroquinerie. The atelier opened in 2014 in a 12,000m² building and houses around 200 artisans. A smaller French atelier in Sologne handles select production. These ateliers make many of the classic Flap bags, the Boy, and a portion of the 11.12.
Where in Italy
Italian Chanel production is concentrated in Tuscany — including ateliers in Scandicci (the Florence leather district we work with) and in the area around Pisa. These ateliers make many of the Boy bag variants, much of the seasonal collection, and a significant share of the Classic Flap. Some smaller leather goods come from Chanel-owned and contract ateliers in the Pisa/Lucca corridor.
How to tell which one you have
The country of origin is stamped on a small hot-foil label inside the bag, usually inside one of the inner pockets. "Made in France" or "Made in Italy" — both are authentic. There is no quality difference between the two; Chanel's QC standards are uniform across both production countries.
The leather supply chain
Chanel's lambskin (the signature soft, pillowy leather) comes from French and Italian tanneries, with a notable portion from Conceria Russo di Casandrino near Naples and Conceria Roveda in Tuscany. Caviar leather (the pebbled grain) is mostly Italian-tanned. Chain hardware and the iconic CC turn-lock are produced in France.
The price math
A Classic Flap Medium retails at approximately €11,500 (after Chanel's aggressive 2020-2024 price hikes; it was €5,800 in 2019). Production cost is estimated at €400-€600 — slightly higher for the French-made versions due to higher Verneuil labour rates. The remaining €10,900+ is brand, design archive, retail (Chanel operates over 300 boutiques), marketing, and the resale premium. (Details: the real markup breakdown.)
How LIETA compares
We don't compete with Chanel — they're a different category. But for the Italian-made portion of their production, our atelier and theirs sit in the same Scandicci district. Our leather (Walpier Buttero) is in the same tier as the Italian-side calf they use. The difference is everything that isn't the bag: the Coco myth, the boutique on rue Cambon, the resale market. The Lungo is €265. The same district. Different story.
